.faust Commissioned Art
In early 2009, Sandbox Theatre commissioned artwork in the form of graphic novellas from an eclectic group of Twin City-based artists. Its purpose was to gain perspective of our subject matter from the minds of artists outside the realm of the theatre stage. Inspiration pieces, leaping-off points, essentially.
What we received from these four artists was nothing short of amazing. Four distinct works of interpretive art; each providing our process with a new angle, a new vision of what Faust and his/her world could be.
The process was simple. Each artist received a block of Faust-related text — some culled from established works, others made patchwork from research material and the mind of Sanbox’s Ryan Hill — and were asked to interpret this text in whatever manner they chose. Their results are below. Enjoy.
“The Summoning” Artwork by Joel Vollmer, with color assist by Jay Wheeler. Text by Ryan Hill.
“Faust in Hell” Artwork by Max Lohrbach (special thanks to William Peterson). Story from 16th Century text, commonly attributed to Christopher Marlowe - adapted by Ryan Hill.
“The Learned Gentlemen” Artwork by Jessica Boire. Text by Ryan Hill.
